Hi - I'm wondering if any Humes from the Perth or Peterborough areas of Ontario know of Margaret Hume? She is a very mysterious figure in my family. She was married to Robert Ritchie in Perth, Ontario in 1825. (Robert and his parents John and Janet Ritchie and many siblings had come from Scotland in 1815 and settled in Perth). Robert and Margaret later farmed in Peterborough county (Dummer Twp. area I think) and by the 1861 census were living in Snowdon township (sometimes considered part of Peterborough county other times Haliburton county, and later amalgamated with the Minden, Ontario area). They had 15 children and I am descended from their son John Ritchie (who reportedly died along with his son Oscar after falling through a frozen lake they were crossing on horseback).
I have not been able to locate Humes on the ships passenger lists from the same time that the Ritchies came over, but maybe I didn't look carefully enough. Another family member thinks Margaret may have come to Perth Ontario by way of Nova Scotia. She is recorded as having been born in Edinburgh in 1808.
Another family legend has it that Margaret was a neice of the last (??) earl of Hume, but was disowned because she fell in love with Robert Ritchie, a commoner, and was written off all family records. However, her brother "Lord George Hume" reportedly later left his entire estate to be split equally among her 15 children in Canada. This legend also describes Margaret Hume and Robert Ritchie as eloping from Scotland and being married by the ship's captain en route to Canada, which clearly is inconsistent with Robert Ritchie coming to Canada with his parents and siblings in 1815 and marrying Margaret Hume 10 years later in Perth, Ontario. So I'm not sure if this legend is just a tall tale or if there is any truth to it. I have not found any Canadian documentation referring to Margaret's parentage.
If anyone can help with this, it would be much appreciated.
