Looking for any information about my gggg grandfather, George F. Humes. He was born 17 Sept. 1807 in Lewistown, Mifflin Co., PA, and married Susanna Howe (b. 1818 in Perry Co., PA, d/o William Howe and Catherine Yingst) on 5 Sept 1837 at the Presbyterian Church, Millerstown, Perry Co., PA. George had a less than stellar career as editor or publisher of several PA newspapers: Juniata Herald (Mifflintown, 1837); New Castle Democrat (Lawrence Co., 1844); Democratic Arch (Franklin, Venango Co., 1845), after which he supposedly worked as a clerk in the PA House of Representatives in Harrisburg.

Between 1840 and 1849, George and Susanna had 4 daughters: Amanda Jane (m. George W. Fasick, my ggg grandparents), Eliza (m. William McCormick), Laura (m. Heilman), and Mary. The family appears in the 1850 US Census for Franklin Boro, Venango Co., PA. In the 1860 US Census, I located Susanna with the 3 unmarried girls in Patterson Boro, Juniata Co., PA. The last reference I have for George is an 1865 Directory of Wayne County, IN, where he is listed as a printer, residing in Richmond. According to an account of the family in The House of Howe by Margaret Leiby Rupp (York, PA, 1951), George F. Humes died in Terre Haute, IN in 1865, and at the time of his death he had a brother, John Humes, living in Altoona, PA.
