I have records of a Humphrey Hunter who was born in Derry County, Ireland on May 14, 1755. He come over with his mother in 1759, soon after his father's death and settled near Poplar Tent, Cabarrus County, where it is said her remains lie. Humphrey at twenty witnessed the Mecklenburg Declaration. At the battle of Camden, S.C., he witnessed the tragic death of the brave Baron De Kalb. On the way to Orangeburg, S.C., a prisoner, he wanted to turn aside for a promised homespun coat, but was stopped by the British and marched before them. He and his fellow prisoners jumped behind a large fallen pine, the knots of which they used to disable the horsemen, and escaped to Charlotte. He graduated at Mount Zion, Winnsboro, S.C., 1787, entering the Presbyterian ministry. He preached thirty-eight years, principally at Goshen and Unity, Lincoln County, and Steel Creek, Mecklenburg County, where his remains lie, having died August 21, 1827. In 1789, he married Jane Ross, daughter of Dr. George Ross, Laurens County, S.C. C.L. Hunter, M.D. an eminent botanist, mineralogist, and historian, is his son.
Also--Humphrey Hunter, born overseas about 1773, married Margaret Ross on July 20, 1795. They had three children--Margaret, Amzi, and Elam. This Humphrey, I believe, would have been the son of Henry Hunter, a brother of the first Humphrey.
This is a book of about 144 pages. There is more information, including some handwritten notes.
