I have never heard the story of how the tombstone came to be broken however, I do have information of the cemetery removal. Isaac and Rebecca were never in the Hardin cemetery but the old Hunter cemetery which was just across the creek on the old home place. The graves were moved in the spring and summer months of 1960. I was 9 years old and our family went several times to the new Hunter-Hill cemetery when many of our relatives were re-located.
I have the records of the layouts of the old cemeteries and they were not followed exactly in the new. Families were laid out in organized plots, leaving room for more family members. Remains from several cemeteries are in the new larger cemetery. My grandfather Samuel T. Stephens was hired as liason for the government to the community. In the Hunter Cemetery there were 152 graves. in those, skeletal ramains were found in 85, 67 graves had "other evidence" of burial. That means nails, casket hardware, bits of wood, buttons or remnants of clothing. Any evidence was put in a simple pine box with a rust proof plate showing the name of the deceased and reburied. It was pretty spooky at the time but now I am glad I was there to see it myself.
I have parents of Elisha Hunter as Elijah and Mary does that correspond with your info? I am really curious about Elizabeth Ross being the mother of Isaac. I only have Elizabeth and would like to pursue her further. The other thing that has given me fits is William Maddox. Are your researching him? I also forgot to mention that in the FGS you have listed a William David Hunter, actually he is William Daniel Hunter.
