ELIZABETHTOWN POST - Thursday March 31st, 1904
Major James Dalliba/Delliba, U.S.A.
"In the souvenir Book of Port Henry's Lady's Aid Society, of the First Presbyterian Church in 1902, the date of Major Dalliba locating at Port Henry is given as 1824, which is correct. In the same work it is stated he built in 1825 the house now occupied by Mr.Wallace T. Foote and in 1824 he opened a store in what was afterwards the Bay State Office, which was kept there until 1834.
Major Dalliba married Oct. 22, 1815, Susannah, daughter of Gurdon Huntington of Utica. She was born at Whitestown, April 8th, 1795, and died at Rome, N.Y. March 19th 1837. Their daughter Sarah Perkins Dalliba, born March 25th, 1824, married June 17th, 1845, Eli Whitney Jr. of New Haven, CT, son of the inventor of the cotton gin. Theyr son Eli Whitney, the third of the name, a graduated from Yale class of 1869 is a well known citizen of New Haven."
"Major Dalliba died Oct. 4th, 1832, his mortal remains as well as those of his wife, rest in the old cemetery north of the residence of Hon. Wallace T. Foote, Jr.
His tombstone bears this inscription: In Memory of James Dalliba, who after a useful life regulated by Christain principle, died in the faith of the Gospel, October 9th, 1832, aged 46 years , 10 months , and his wife Susan, widow of Major J. Dalliba, daughter of Gurdon Huntington, died at Rome, NY March 19th, 1837. A larger white marble shaft was erected, I'm informed in 1959.
The partenage of Major Dalliba little is known. He was the son of George Dalliba, one of the pioneer residents of Whitestown, N.Y., the family having moved here from Connecticuit, probably in 1785. A sister of Major Dalliba, Penelope Dabilla, born at Whitestown, Nov. 1786, married July 1805, at Oriskany, Asa Merrill, son of Jared Merrill of Whitestown, also an early settler of that place from Simsbury,CT. She died at Byron, N.Y. , April 22,1823. They were the parents of the late Major Hamilton Wilcox Merrill.

I hope some of this information helps you. The article spells his name as Dalliba and Delliba. There are no genform message boards for either spelling of the surname.
