Hi Chuck, and thanks for your responses to my posts. This is all very fascinating to me.This past August we had a Huntington Family Reunion for the descendants of Charles Matthew and Nina (Harrold) Huntington of Somerset, NY,who are my father-in-law's parents. (My father-in-law was born in 1916 and will be 91 on Dec. 30) Charles is the grandson of Joshua and Rebecca (Hawley) of Somerset. A cousin had done some research back in the early 80's and there were letters from a M. Parke Huntington of Tusla OK who was the HFA historian at the time. You find Joshua listed as the son of Gurdon. They determined pretty definatively that the Gurdon mentioned in the Huntington Genealogy book as having gone to Batavia was our Gurdon. To check it out further I went to the Holland Land Office Museum in Batavia and found Gurdon Huntington in Turner's Pioneer History of the Holland Purchase. He bought land first-hand from the Holland Land Company in Batavia in 1815.There were several transactions in that book over the next 10 years or so, which I then took to the Clerk's office and looked through the deed books. These parcels were in fact deeded to Gurdon and Polly Huntington. At one point Gurdon and Polly sold land to Joshua and Rebecca. They were all of Genesee County at the time.In a later transaction (1860) they are listed as being of Niagara County, Somerset.I'm puzzling over Polly, somewhat.I see her referred to as Mary "Polly" Huntington sometimes. She signed her name on the legal papers as simply Polly Huntington.Anyway, it would be interesting to know more about Gurdon and Polly.According to the Illustrated History of Niagara County 1821-1878, "Gurdon T. Huntington Jr. was born in Batavia NY Dec. 15, 1825.He came from Genesee County to Somerset in 1834 (so now I know when Gurdon and Polly moved to Niagara County) and was married Sept. 17, 1845 to Sally L., daughter of J. & E. Bloomer of Somerset.Gurdon Huntington Sr. died Sept. 15, 1867 aged 83."This Gurdon Huntington is ascribed CT nativity on the census records and, it seems likely, is the Gurdon mentioned in the genealogy book as leaving CT to go to Batavia.I am really just picking up the threads of something begun back in the 80's by my husband's cousin.Your thoughts?Diane
