Jerusha Hurlbut , c.1745-c.1780
While researching Wolcotts of Weatherfield CT, I found that Josiah Wolcott of Wethersfield had an illigitimate child by Jerusha Hurlbut in 1772.It was not uncommon in colonial times, but the father usually married the mother. In this case, Josiah married another woman in March, and Jerusha had his child in June.I have since discovered that Jerusha had several other children out of wedlock: a son by Daniel Warner in 1781, another son by Edward Howard in 1763, another son by Solomon Waddams in 1768, a daughter by Patrick Staterer in 1772 (sic.), and Josiah Wolcott's son in 1772.That seems like something of a record, and very unusual for those times.Josiah's son was raised by his cousin.Does anyone know what happened to the others? There were two Jerusha Hurlbuts at Wethersfield, one born 1744 to Charles and Martha Hurlbut, and another born 1745 to Thomas Jr. and Abigail Belding Hurlbut. One of these apparently married Joseph Wells in 1767 at Wethersfield, so the other must have been the one with all the illegitimate children.Does anyone know which was which ?
