It seems more than just coincidental to me. In tracing all of my pre-Revolution ancestors, the pattern seems to be that they arrived in Massachusetts or Connecticutt in the 1600's. The next generation married, then moved to another settlement 50-100 miles away. THEIR children married their cousins, then moved to another settlement, etc., into the 19th century.
In my case it was the Hurlbuts and Jenners who started out in Woodbury, Connecticutt. The next generation settled Pittsford, Vermont, and the next generation moved to Harmony, New York. About a half dozen families seemed to have might this migration together. So I would not be surprised to find that your Hurlbuts and mine all came from the same stock ...
