Funny you should talk about WA, OR and CA! Actually, I was raised in Washington and Oregon and born in California. My father is Neil Huson, whose father was Hobart Mark Huson. My father was raised in Sacramento, and apparently there are a lot of us in the Cal. Central Valley. His grandfather was Thomas Huson (not that it helps; there are a million Thomas Husons it seems). Actually, I've found one Thomas Huson from Tehama, CA--in the Central Valley, possibly my grandpa's grandfather--whose birthplace is listed as NY on a work certificate.
The story I've been able to piece together is that the name came from Hughson, a sept of the Clan Donald (MacDonald). During the revolution, apparently the Hughsons were loyalists and a rebel son of a British Lieutenant by the name of Hughson changed his name to Huson to disassociate himself from his father and brothers. Then, it appears there was another name change when one of the loyalist Hughsons fled to Canada where an ancestor Lord Hughson of Scotland had land from a royal grant. That name change, also to Huson, happened generations later because of another family feud I think. Interestingly, one of my great grandfathers apparently was buried in Canada under an assumed name. Not sure what the name is, but I'm on it.
My grandmother--Marie Huson--who was Mayor and City Historian for a CA Central Valley city called Rocklin, seems to back up the story. She knows that the family history began with immigrants from Scotland in the late 1600s. As I've found more info., that first immigrant seems to be one of the first Thomas Husons (although his name was spelled Hughson), who landed in NY around 1700. Then, she says there were two name changes--one brought on by the American Revolution and another by family feud--in the same blood line. Her story seems to support much of the information on this web site. Unfortunately, she's very old and doesn't remember much anymore.
Have you found anything else??
