If this Mary you want is the Mary, wife of Thomas Hilton who were located in 1880 in Marshall County, and in 1885 in Sumner township, Iowa County, then I may have the one that you want. The 1885 census tells that Mary was born in Tama County. Also, the 1880 census reveals her parents were born in OH.

Oliva, 15, IL

Sarah, 3, IA
Eliza, 1, IA

1860 census (Butlerville P.O.)

1870 census

Eliza, 15, IA
May, (or Mary), 10, IA<--
Ellen, 3, IL

1880 census, Butlerville, Tama, IA
Taylor, William, 66, OH VA VA
Ellen, dau, 13, IL OH NY

----------------------

1880 census LeGrande Township, Marshall County, IA
Hilton, Thomas, 23, farmer, OH OH OH
Mary, wife, 20, keeps house, IA OH OH
Clarence, son, 1, IA OH IA

1885 Iowa State Census, Sumner township, Iowa county, IA
Hilton, Thomas, 28, laborer, b. IL
Mary, 24, b. Tama County
Clarence, 6, b. Tama County
George, 4, b. Marshall County

1895 Iowa State Census, Walnut, Pottawattomie, IA
Hilton, Mary, 34, (Says b. Germany County, Ia, but there is no such place, trancriber's error)
Clarance, 16, same location
George, 11, b. Marshall County
Carl, 11, b. Benton County
Lenard, 9, b. Marshall County,
Effie, 6, b. Pottawattomie County

1900 census Spring Valley, Dallas, Iowa
Hilton, Mary, head, b. Nov 1860, wid, 5 children, IA OH IL
Clarence, son, b. Feb 1879, IA IL IA
Leonard, son, b. Feb 1886, IA IL IA
Ethel, dau. b. Jan 1889, IA IL IA

By the 1930 census Mary is living with son Clarence in California, but he reports she was born in IL to OH parents

Note that there are several discrepancies in what has to be the same family. Thomas is reported as born both in OH and IL, Mary as in IA most of the time, but once in IL, Mary's mother reported by Mary as born in OH, but by Mary's mother as sometimes OH, and most of the time NY. It appears Betsy Taylor died when Mary was fairly young, so she might not have known too well where she was from.

It might be worth having the probate records checked with the County Clerk's office in Tama County to see if William Taylor had probate papers that mentioned a Mary Hilton. He died after 1880, and doesn't show up on 1885 census. Iowa didn't record vitals much until 1880, so Mary Taylor Hilton's birth is not likely recorded. You also might get lucky and find a marriage record that might give a clue as to her parents. Marriage records are probably in the County Recorder's office.

I'm not related.
