My Great Grandmother was Alminda Frances Pierce. Born in 1852 in Illinois, she was the daughter of James and Sarah (Kenton) Pierce. They had relocated originally from Ohio to Illinois and then to Iowa. Alminda first married Seth Paup on July 13, 1873. They had two daughters, Myrtle Winifred (1873) and Ineze Abia (1877). Both were born in Iowa.
Seth died sometime before 1880 and Alminda remarried. The husband's last name was Miller and herein lies the dilemma. I don't know his first name, but it may begin with the initial "J". Alminda and ? Miller had three children: Edna L (1882), Grant C (1885) and my grandmother, Hope Alouise (1890). Grandma told me that her father had "abandoned" them when she was very, very young and that Alminda would never let his name be mentioned in the house. My cousin (Edna's grandson) said that Aunt Edna had told them at one time that her mother would take her with Grandma and Uncle Grant to a jail in Cedar, Iowa, and would show them a window where she said their father was. Alminda and the three younger children moved to Kansas City, Kansas, between 1890 and 1900. They came down here from Iowa in a covered wagon. My grandmother said that she was too young to remember much of anything about it. She would sometimes mention Sioux City.
The census records that I have show her still unmarried and living with her parents in Hale, Jones, Iowa in 1870, with Seth Paup listed as a farm laborer for Alminda's father. The census for 1880 shows her widowed and her two Paup daughters living with her parents in Madison, Jones, Iowa. I can't find her again until 1900 in Kansas City, Kansas, as Alminda Miller with the three younger children.
I would assume that Alminda and ? married sometime around 1881. A lot of the other family lived around Cumberland and are buried in that area.
