Obituary of ALEXANDER DOWNIE (or DOWNEY), 1830 – 1908; Immigrated to USA from Ayrshire, Scotland in 1855
SURNAMES: DOWNIE (alternate spellings DOWNEY, DONEY, DONY, DONIE), GILMORE, LANTZ, LEISER (or LIZER, LIESER), PARKS
ALEXANDER DOWNIE was born near Ayrshire, Scotland on April 23, 1830 and died in Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa on March 10, 1908. Through the years, some sources have listed his first name as “Alec”, and alternate spellings of the family name may include “Downey”, “Doney”, “Dony”, or “Donie”. Alexander Downie’s boyhood days were spent on a farm as a laborer, and both his parents died by the time he was age 9. In the spring of 1855, he immigrated to America. On October 1855, he was united in marriage with Catharine (or Kathryn) Parks in Troy, New York. Miss Parks was born in Scotland on January 6, 1831 and immigrated to the United States, arriving in New York on the ship Mongolia on August 4, 1854 with father James Parks, mother Rosanna, and 6 brothers and sisters. They moved to a farm near Benson, Woodford County, Illinois where they resided for a number of years. To this union eight children were born: Jennetta and James, who preceded their parents in death; Rosanna, now Mrs. Abraham Lantz; Thomas Bell Downie of Goodwine, Indiana; Elizabeth (sometimes referred to as Louisa) Downie (Mrs. James Owen Gilmore), of Denham, Indiana; Charles, of North Judson, Indiana; George, whose whereabouts are unknown; and Everal Sumner Downie, now of Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa. In 1874, the Alexander Downie family moved to a section of wild prairie land in Ash Grove Township, Iroquois County, Illinois where they resided for twenty-five years, during which time the children all grew to adulthood and were married, except youngest son Everal. In 1899, Mr. & Mrs. Downie and son Everal moved to Van Buren County, Michigan where they purchased a farm and resided for a time. Catharine Parks Downie died in Bangor, Michigan on June 26, 1900. On October 9, 1901, son Everal married Emma Barbara Leiser (sometimes spelled Lizer or Lieser) and moved to Liberty Township, Ringgold County, Iowa. Being left a widower, Alexander Downie moved to the home of son Everal and wife Emma Barbara in Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa, where Alexander died on March 10, 1908.
Alexander Downie was a man of rugged character and a jolly disposition and when he left Iroquois County did not have an enemy in it. He was kind and charitable in all his dealings and as honest as the day is long. His final illness dated from January 1908 when he suffered a severe attack of the grip. He passed away peacefully fully believing that Jesus Christ was crucified for his sins. His daily prayer was that he might be prepared for the end when it came. The body was brought to Goodwine, Indiana for funeral services. Burial was in Amity Cemetery, Iroquois County, Illinois.
