Remembering Camas Prairie

It nearly breaks my heart to check the Camas County Forum and find nothing or very little. I remember so many wonderful things about the area. Both sets of my grandparents lived in Fairfield. One granddad lived out on the ranch and Gram lived in town. We nearly always stayed with my father's parents in a very modest house on the north edge of town. I remember going with Gramma to visit around town. Mrs VanSkike with her millions of african violets, the grocery store where they tied up your purchases with paper and string, the telephone office right on the main road through town (not to many folks had phones).
How many miles did we kids ride on the hood of Uncle Wes's motor scooter? Folks always knew us as the Peck kids cause most of us had the "red hair". I always was indignant because my last name wasn't Peck but my mother's used to be.
I remember going to the DogHouse with Grandpa and drinking orange soda while Grandpa had his beer. Catching tadpoles in the creek near Grams house and trying to figure out where they all went after a couple of days.
It makes me cry when I go back now and see all the things that are gone, changed or just different. I wish all my grandchildren had the same experiences I had when I spent my two weeks, yearly in Fairfield. Such great memories.
