Richard Ijams Sr. of Maryland-corrected death date
Richard Ijams Sr. was NOT the Richard who made the "codicil" in ca. 1761.Proof that these two men were different Richards lies in the following new evidence along with what I've posted recently.
1. In Anne Arundel Co. Land Commissions, 1724-1766, Liber 2, p. 345:
George Ijams was one of several people giving depositions concerning the boundaries of a property, and by doing so, proved that his older brother Richard Ijams Sr. was by then deceased, and did not live to 1761 as claimed by sources. And William had died in 1738, which also fits George's testimony, which starts off as follows:
"The Deposition of George Ijams aged about Sixty years who being duly sworn at the abovementioned Pear Tree Deposed that he hath been often told by his Mother and Brothers William and Richard Ijams All Deced and others that the said Pear Tree stood...."1 October 1751.
"Mother" was Elizabeth (Cheney) Ijams. This is the Richard who had married Elizabeth (Gaither) as his second wife and died before July 1750 when she married John Cheney and were mentioned in a deed. They held the 111 acres whichthey later sold to William Chapman, and purchased Elk Thicket.(The 111 acreage later ended up in the hands ofSarah Ijams in 1780 as the granddaughter of Richard Ijams Sr.She was the daughter of Richard Ijams Jr. and Mary Nichols.Chapman or some successive owner must have given the 111 acres to Sarah.)Elizabeth and John Cheney lived at Elk Thicket where she is believed to have died by ca. 1762 or 1763 when John Cheney sold the property and her name was not mentioned. One of his witnesses was Joseph Gaither.
2. Richard Ijams who m. Mary Nichols were parents of Sarah mentioned above. What happened to them?Could he have remarried?
3.The Richard Ijams who died ca. 1761 was probably the Richard Ijams, son of William Ijams Jr. because he was the only Richard Ijams who had brothers named Thomas and John Ijams who were mentioned in his inventory as kindred. This Richard's wife also happened to be named Elizabeth, which adds to the confusion, but I do not know who she was.She is not to be confused with Richard Ijams Sr.'s second wife Elizabeth who m. later John Cheney.Any ideas who this Elizabeth was?
4. According to the 4th edition of "Adventurers of Purse and Person," Elizabeth Gaither m. an Ijams and had son Henry and other children.Does anyone have information about this Henry if this information is accurate?
This Elizabeth sounds like Richard Ijams Sr.'s second wife?
