Winfield Mounds Excavation, 1931

Wheaton Illinoisian, April 1931:

University of Chicago scientists, working in conjuction with Dick Cook of 202 Ellis Ave., opened one of three prehistoric burial mounds north of Winfield Saturday and although excavations are not completed, one perfect vase and several pieces of pottery were discovered Sunday afternoon.

This is the first mound in DuPage County to be officially opened by scientists and their discovery should be a lesson to those who pit these mounds promiscuously without the slightest regard for their historical facts connected with their finding.
