ref: History of Edwards, Lawrence, and Wabash Counties, Illinois:
Salem:
"Lot Sams was a native of North Carolina, but had lived in Tennessee and Kentucky. From the latter State he came to Illinois about the year 1815, with his family, on pack-horses. He first settled in what is now Shelby precinct, on the S. W. quarter of section 35, T.1N., R. 10E. where he remained five or six years, and then moved to the S.W. quarter of section 25, where he died October 24, 1863. By thrift and energy he accumulated a considerable amount of property. Samsville, a little hamlet of six or seven families, bears his name. A post-office was established here in 1865."

Note: Lot Sams was born 1784 in NC. He married Elizabeth Doty (born 1800 NC) 10 Apr 1845 in Edwards Co IL.

Lot Sams, Jr., born 1825 Edwards Co IL, married Mary M. Hill (born 1828 KY) on 10 Apr 1845 Edwards Co IL.
