Hi Caralyn,

My CASE greatgrandparents were in Subdistrict Douglas TWP in the city of Effingham in the 1900 and 1920 Effingham Co Census. In 1920 they were living on South Cherry Street. Maybe this will help you pinpoint Douglas TWP or not - if you haven't already.

According to the Everton Publishers Inc., The Handy Book for Genealogists, Effingham Co was created in 1831 from Fayette and Crawford counties. Jasper Co is between Crawford and Effingham, but it too was created in 1831 from Crawford and Clay counties. Possibly you'll find your Samuel and Mary in Fayette or Crawford counties.

In the Gilbert S. Bahn book, American Place Names of Long Ago, there are three towns named Douglas in IL. But they're in Cook, Knox, and St. Clair counties.

Wilma
