Bedford Township - an error?

I did some checking on "Bedford Township". It seems that several Internet census indexes for the year 1880 list Wyatt Stanley as residing in Bedford, Henderson County, Illinois. That might be a long forgotten Post Office, but not the name of a township. Information from the Illinois State Archives states that township government wasn't adopted in Henderson County until 1906, so possibly the townships were not named until then (can someone clarify this point?).

Actually, the location of Wyatt Stanley's residence as given in the 1880 census states he was in Township 8 North Range 4 West, and doesn't even give the name Bedford. That would put it in Raritan Township today. Here is a link to the State's township map for Henderson County:

The United States Geological Survey notes that there was a Bedford School in the extreme southern region of Raritan Township. I think this link might show it on a map -
