Regarding Hiram Dotson, I'm in no way related, but I looked up on Ancestry.com Census search for you.

A Hiram Dotson was in Logan County on the 1840 Cenusus, just like you said with Wife and 2 daughters. (Living near current day Chestnut, Il...then called Yankeetown area)..

On 1850 Census of the next county over from Logan (very close to area he was in 1840...) in DEWITT county, Il...

487/492/ Hiram Dotson age 41 Farmer born Virginia
Nancy A. age 36 born Virginia
Lucinda J. age 13 born IL

Their neighbors on either side were the McLaughlin family
and the Dotson Family...Not sure that matters, but sometimes it's a clue.

He is shown on 1860 census in same County (DEWITT), Town TEXAS, DEWITT< IL.

Hiram Dotson age 51 Farmer Virginia
Nancy Ann age 46 Tenn (on this census her birth is listed as Ten.)

1870 Cenusus: DEWITT county, IL (Texas town(ship))

Hiram Dotson age 61 Farmer..VA
Nancy A. age 56 Keep House...back to VA as birth

I don't find them on the 1880 Census anywhere.

HOPE SOME OF THIS INFO HELPS YOU, that's all I found.
Good luck...dig around DEWITT COUNTY websites.

Barb
