According to the "Centennial History of Decatur and Macon County IL", Macon County was at one time much larger, comprising parts of Dewitt, Piatt and Moultrie Counties. Niantic Township was added in order to keep the county seat from being removed from Decatur to Whitmore Township and the town of Murphreesboro, which at the time was closer to the center of the county. The land that makes up Niantic Township was considered to be inferior and was acquired at a low cost. (As Macon Co. shrank in size to help create Dewitt, Piatt and Moultrie counties, the acquisition of the land for Niantic Township and the decision to keep Decatur the county seat seemed to have been a good one.)
