Your "Nathan" was Nathaniel Benjamin White:
1900 Census, Military and Naval Population: Nathaniel was in Mayaquez, Puerto Rico, serving as a private in Company C, 11th Regiment, Infantry. His stateside residence was Mt. Pulaski [Logan County] Illinois. He was described as W M born April 1875 Illinois; father b. IL; mother b. OH
This matches up with his parents, Samuel White, a brick mason born in December 1840, and Mary E., born in October 1847, living in Mount Pulaski in 1900. Mary had 9 children born, 8 living, with 4 still at home.
