My great-grandfather Benjamin Franklin Thomas was born in Nov 1870 IL; family resided in Odin, IL west of Salem. Benjamin may have first married about 1890 to an unknown woman and reportedly lived on a boat for a time on possibly the Ohio River. I am concerned about Benjamin's second marriage in 1899 to Nettie May Copelin.

Benjamin had one much older half-sister Louisa Jane born in 1854 GA and a sister Purina born in 1866 MO.

Benjamin's parents Alfred Thomas (born 1818 NC) and Margaret Morrison (born 1837 SC) died suddenly about 1874 leaving Benjamin as an orphan. His older half-sister Louisa Jane cared for Benjamin. Louisa married Alfred Green Morris (once president of SIU-Carbondale) and raised Benjamin in the Morris home southwest of Xenia, IL (Clay/Wayne/Marion tri-County area just inside Clay Co.). It is at the Morris house in northeastern Marion County, Illinois that Benjamin first met Nettie May Copelin, born 1880.
