Re: Gregory’s of Virginia > Indiana > Illinois > Kansas-1800’s.

I am researching the families of John T. Gregory and Charles F. Gregory from Indiana who resided there in the mid-1800's. Some of the Gregory family members I am researching were probably residing in: Virginia in the 1790’s and early 1800’s; were residing in Jefferson County, Indiana; Dearborn County, Indiana; or Madison County, Indiana during the 1860 census; and residing in Woodford, Marshall or La Salle Counties, Illinois, in the 1860 or 1870 census.

I have not been able to find indexes to search for the census records from these counties in Illinois and Indiana, nor been able to make the Gregory family connection to Virgina.

John T. Gregory: b. 1847 in Indiana; his parents were both born in Virginia and resided in Indiana prior to 1847; enlisted Nov. 4, 1864 in the Indiana Light Artillery 2nd Battery and listed his residence on his muster-in card as Madison, Indiana (don't know if it was the town or county of Madison); was residing in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas by 1880 (census); d. May/June, 1918; buried Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas; married Amanda L. (Jones or Wilson) in Indiana or Illinois, probably shortly after the Civil War. Amanda L. (Jones or Wilson) was born about 1847 in Illinois, and she is also buried in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas.

Mother of John T. Gregory: Anna (Caldwell) Gregory; b. November 30, 1827 in Virginia, d. July 18, 1900 in Andover, Sedgwick County, Kansas. Anna’s mother was an American Indian named Make Peace.

Father of John T. Gregory: father’s name unknown; b. in Virginia; m. unknown; d. unknown.

Sister of John T. Gregory: Louisa J. Gregory, b. Oct. 28, 1848 in Indiana; d. Oct. 20, 1907 in Andover, Sedgwick County, Kansas; m. James Wilson in Sedgwick County, Kansas on Sept. 15, 1872. Louisa J. Gregory, her mother, Anna (Caldwell) Gregory-Jones, and 4 step-siblings left Minonk, Illinois by train in Dec. 1870, and moved to Sedgwick County, Kansas where Louisa J. homesteaded on 160 acres next to the 160 acre homestead of her mother, (Anna), step-father (Henry Alexander Jones), and four step-siblings.

Charles F. Gregory, who was possibly a brother, father or cousin of John T. Gregory, was residing in Aurora, Dearborn County, Indiana, when he enlisted in the Indiana Light Artillery 2nd Battery in the early 1860's.

John T. Gregory and Amanda were probably married shortly after the Civil War, and they had at least 6 children: Charles A. Gregory, who may have been born in Indiana, or near Minonk or Pattonsberg, Illinois; Anna; Emma; Cora; Martha B.; and Ralph Willard, b. June 15, 1871 in Illinois, possibly near Minonk or Pattonsberg.

I will greatly appreciate receiving any information on the families of John T. Gregory and Charles F. Gregory from Virginia, Indiana and Illinois during the 1800’s.
