I have one of those warrants, too. McDonough County was in what is know (I think) as the Illinois Bounty Tract. This is land that was set aside as bounty (or reward) to War of 1812 and other veterans. They were given a warrant for 100 acres. The one we have was originally issued to a War of 1812 veteran living in Vermont. He sold it to a land speculator in Vermont who later sold it to a couple in Illinois. The land was purchased by my gggrandfather for back taxes.
Your relative may never have been in Illinois at all. He may have sold his warrant.
