From the St. Charles (IL) Chronicle, 28 Oct. 1904:

While makeing a preliminary survey, rural route insport for northern Illinois, George A. Bennett of Marengo, was killed by an automobile he had used about two weeks. The accident occurred near Harmony, McHenry county. when he and a man named Willard in the auto approached a bridge near Harmony they met a rural mail carrier driving a team of mules. The mules became frighted on perceiving the auto and swerved about, running after the machine, and Mr. Bennett looked around to see what had happened. this was just as the auto struck the bridge, and as it did so it plunged off the end of the same, a distance of about ten feet. It turned upside down, pinioning both men underneath it. The derrick wheel struck Mr. Bennett in the chest, crushing the same. He lived about forty minutes. Mr. Willard was seriously bruised.
