My Book "Children from Orphan Trains New York to IL and Beyond" compiled by Janet Coble shows William J Britton
born abt 1868 age 5 years. then it says age 13 years. He appears twice, so I wonder if he was moved from one home to another. The book only contains stuff from the New York Juvenile Asylum. It was published by the ILlinois State Genealogical Society, 1994, 1997. It is very informative. Your library could probably get it for you on loan.
It (NY JUV Asylum) only took children between age of 7 and 14. the institution your ggrandmother sited was perhaps for infants. It has been awhile since I have looked into this topic. What is sad is that many of these children had parents who were poor and couldn't care for them. There are several children who were placed in Kankakee IL. Did you grandmother know the name of the family her mother lived with? If Britton is the family's name or Ellsworth is the families name, it would take a little longer to reveiw the book.
