Have you tried to get an obituary? Perhaps there would be a reference to where he worked before he became ill. There is a site online that also shows you where each coal mine was located but I don't know that will help you. The site address is: http://www.isgs.uiuc.edu/servs/pubs/coalmps.htm#mcmm It takes quite a while to load but you can move around on the map and see where the various mines were located. There are numbers and letters assigned each mine and a followup page with the coal mine names and owners. It is impossible to print one from the site as the maps are very large. They can be ordered, however. When you said he was buried on the Farm, did you mean the Coal Valley County Home farm? Did he spend some years at the farm with his illness? If so, do they have records for him? The Gilchrist family was heavily involved in coal mining in both Rock Island and Mercer Counties. For some reason I think the Gilchrist papers are at the Rock Island Historical Society. I do not know what they include. I had several relatives who died in their mines and I keep telling myself that next time I go there, I'll ask about the Gilchrist files. There is a village in Mercer County that is called Gilchrist - and is where my relatives mined and where I attended grade school. I believe the Gilchrists came to Rock Island County about the time of the Civil War and were first involved in mining on the bluffs at Rapids City which is right on the Mississippi River. None of this may help but perhaps it will give some ideas of research that is possible. Notify Administrator about this message?
