The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, June 18, 1908 He Dies Suddenly Monday Morning While Engaged About the Farm. His biography in the county history is as follows: "O.F. BROWNLEE is a native of Illinois, born in Mercer County, June, 1840, where he resided until 1869, going to school and farming. In September, 1861, he enlisted in the 36th Illinois Infantry. He took part in the battles of Pea Ridge, Corinth, Perryville, Stone River and Chickamauga and was twice wounded. All honor to the soldier who has stood at the gates of death to strike for his country. He was honorably discharged in October, 1864, coming to Lucas County in 1869. Was married in November, 1860, to S.J. THOMPSON, of Massachusetts. They have four children: ELIDA O., LEEMAN N., WILLIAM F. and FRANK W." For many years he had been a prominent figure in the affairs of Lucas County being one of the leading farmers and business men of his section and was of fine presence and intellectual poise. He was public spirited and took an active part in public affairs and always pleaded for the best in the material as well as along intellectual lines. He held the esteem of his neighbors and his positiveness of character led all with whom he came in contact to regard favorably his motives although not always agreeing with him. In his passing O.F. BROWNLEE will be much missed. No farmers meeting was complete without his presence and his influence on the religious and political phases of our community was considerable. Funeral was held from the late home in English Township, yesterday, conducted by a former pastor, Rev. Atwood, now of the Presbyterian Church at Brookfield, Mo., and interment was made in the Chariton Cemetery, many friends attending to pay the departed the respect due one who had so long dwelt among them. ---------------------------- The circumstances of his death as reported to the Leader are: On Thursday, of last week, he had an attack caused from an affection of heart and lungs. From this he had partially recovered and was in Chariton since, but suffered from the effects of the attack. On Monday morning he had been out looking about certain chores but had returned to his room where his wife found him, a few moments later, life being extinct. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert February 28, 2005 iggy29@rnetinc.net http://www.rootsweb.com/~ialucas/Main.htm Notify Administrator about this message?
