Sue, you've given me a treasure chest of long-sought info! Thanks you v-e-r-y much! My g-grandfather, George Washington McGinnis, was given his name because he was born on Feb. 22, according to family lore. His grandchildren never mentioned the names of his parents, so your info on them is something I've been seeking for a while.
We've also talked about him as a glassblower, which shows up in the Mo. death certificate you cited. I've looked for it but had no success, so I thank you for giving it to me. I've also been to Calvary Cemetery and obtained info from their helpful staff. Also,Jumbo's tombstone is pictured on a website devoted to tombstones of baseball stars.
One of Jumbo's offspring wound up in California, and I've gotten a large family-tree branch from a distant cousin there. I also have narrative and baseball stats from the archivist at "The Sporting News," the editor of the St. Louis Archdiocese newspaper who is also a baseball historian, and the archives of the "St. Louis Globe-Democrat."
Now, I can begin writing my family's history in the context of their place -- St. Louis and Missouri, using some books on St. Louis history and the recently published and relatively academic "Irish in Missouri." (Fr. Flaherty's book, "The St. Louis Irish" was mostly about the wealthy Catholic Irish who gave $$$ to St. Louis Univ. I'm a retired writer/editor and am looking forward to my family project. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! ~~ "Casey" McGinnis Croy.
