You didn't mention what you've done already in your search to find a deed or record. So, without knowing that and without knowing anything you have on this ancestor, here goes..

http://publicrecords.onlinesearches.com/Illinois-Land-Records-and-Deeds.htm
"Deeds and other document recording are managed by the County Clerk in each county. Some counties with larger clerk offices have a separate office, generally called the Recorder or Registrar of Deeds. Recorded documents include deeds, mortgage documents, easements, powers of attorney, marriage licenses, and liens.
A few counties provide online access to recorded documents. Some online access sites require registration and the payment of a fee. Recorded documents can also be obtained by contacting the County Clerk in person, by mail, or by phone."

They'd be the first place to try. Many offices will not do such a lookup, so beware on that. If you cannot get there yourself, then try forums that are specific to this county and see if you can find someone who would do public records lookups for you. There may be fees or charges for them to do so.

You'd want to first learn about any listings he'd show up in in the GRANTOR (Seller) indexes. Many times deeds will make reference to when the seller acquired the land. Keep an open eye for transactions that could fall under "estate of" or "heirs of". Another way to check these out is to look for property his children/heirs may have sold off, they may give you enough of a reference to create a trail to trace backwards if your ancestor gave them the land.

You can also check out the GRANTEE indexes, but they may be more difficult depending on how the indexes are done (years, etc.) and if you have no clue as to when he purchased searching these may be time consuming.

Another thing is that if he purchased this land prior to Fulton Co.'s formation, then such would probably be registered and kept in that other county. For information on this, please see:

Good Luck!
