I looked at the 1880 census and found John and Kate Milne with children Jannie (might be Jennie) and Thomas, living at Grant, Lake County, IL. He was listed as a land speculator. The one difference I note from what you posted – his age was listed as 33 (which would put his birth year as 1847).

I found them in the 1900 census in Chicago. The 1900 gives birth month and year.

1900 US Census, Chicago, Ward 26 (Town of Lakeview – 1121 Southport Ave) Enumerated June 7, 1900

John K. Milne, b. Sept 1847 England, conductor, immigrated 1876
Catherine Milne, b. Sept 1856 Illinois, parents born Ireland, wife
Jennie M. Milne, b. July 1877, Illinois, daughter
Thomas D. Milne, b. April 1881, Illinois, son, conductor

Catherine was listed as the mother of 3 children and all 3 were alive at the time of the census.
John K. and Catherine had been married 23 years.

The 1910 Census still shows John K. and Catherine Milne and their son Thomas D. on Southport Avenue (the street number is crossed thru – same for the household before them – the one before that is 3649). John K is a ticket agent for an elevated railway and Thomas D. is a dispatcher for an elevated railway. John K.’s immigration year is shown as 1875. Catherine is shown as the mother of 4 children – 2 of whom were alive at the time of the census. John K. and Catherine had been married 34 years.

The 1920 Census still shows them at 3649 Southport Ave, Chicago. Only John K. and Catherine were in the household. He is shown as a cashier for a railroad and his immigration year is shown as 1875.

I didn’t find them in 1930.

Illinois Regional Archives Depository (IRAD) shows John K. Milne and Catherine Drury were married in Cook County on February 7, 1876.

IRAD also has Illinois death records. I found a John Kirkaldy Milne who died August 15, 1923 in Chicago. I also found a listing for a Catherine Drury Milne died September 2, 1932 in Chicago.

I found John K. Milne’s death notice in the Chicago Tribune August 17, 1923. It says he died suddenly at his home, lists his wife, Cathryn Drury Milne and 2 children – Jean M. Hackett and the late Thomas D. Milne. Funeral at home – 1028 Montrose Ave and burial at Rosehill. No further details.

Catherine Drury Milne’s death notice (same newspaper) says her residence was 650 Arlington Pl. It lists her children – Mrs Jean M. Hackett, the late Thomas D. Milne, and grandchildren – Nancy Hackett, Kathryn, Jean, Thomas and Joan Milne. It also lists her late husband as John K. Milne. Burial Rosehill.

I found a John Kirkaldy Milne who was listed as born Sup. Registrar’s District – Poplar (Vol II Page 315) Greater London Middlesex Oct-Nov-Dec 1846.
(All England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915)

George Milne at Morrison, Whiteside County, IL in 1880 was listed as born in England, age 33 (so ca 1847) and was a “retired restauranteur.” His wife, Hettie, age 38, was born in Massachusetts. Their children, all born in Illinois:

Annie, 14
Hettie, 10
Maud, 6
Addie, 4
George, 2
Baby, 1 (not named in record but was male)

IRAD shows a George Milne married Hetty Stowell in Whiteside County, IL on May 14, 1865.

IRAD also shows a George Milnes (note spelling) died at Morrison, Whiteside County on September 14, 1931. IRAD listed other George Milne and Milnes but this is the only one in Whiteside County. IRAD also lists a Hettie Sheldon Milne died in Morrison, Whiteside County on July 30, 1921.

Hope this information will be useful in your search.
Paul
