Hi Thomas. Martha Ann was listed in the 1850 Census and her date of birth was Nov. 10, 1845 - as "M.A." daughter of Hugh Steele and Sarah Smith. She is listed along with about 5 other siblings. She disappears in the 1860 Census. She married John G. Wilson on Nov. 25, 1858 in Mason Co., IL. Clyde Wilson was born in 1858 in IL and John Quincy Wilson was born in 1860 in IL. The father, John G. Wilson was convicted for Larceny and sent to Alton Prison in 1960. Yes, Martha was about 13 when she married. There could be extenuating circumstances behind that marriage. By that era being married at 13 wasn't all that unusual. (My huband's mom was 14 and his dad 17 when they married and this was in the 1940's.) She married my Gr Grandfather, William Hawthorne Aug. 12, 1862 in IL. When they moved to St. Joseph, MO. I don't know but John Q. Wilson was listed in the Census as living in the Hawthorne family. Martha died on Oct. 10, 1905 in St. Joseph, MO. and is buried with my Gr Grandfather who died the following year there. William was born Aug. 27, 1835 in Mason Co., IL. They had 5 children: William H. (my Granddad) b. 1863 in IL., Adeline M. b. 1876, b. Colorado; Clark S. b. 1878 in Kansas; Claude W. b. 1881 in Okalahoma and Harry W. b. 1885, but I don't know where, possibly OK or MO.

There is a possibility that Martha's parents could also be a William Steele and a Mary Darwin Pea. But I can't prove that either. The Hugh Steele and Sarah Smith was info passed to me by two people who are off the Wilson/Steele side. But I haven't been able to confirm that either. I am just getting confused and need some help.

Lynne (Hawthorne) Rodriguez
