Hi Mary, I don't know what you received from social security. Did they send you his ss5? The application card he filled out when he registered with soc. security. I can find no reference to a Carlton or Joplin Illinois. Even looked for a township in Il. with those names. Nada. Primary census indexes are by state & county. A town name is not always relevant in a census index or enumeration. If you have his ss5 where was he living when he filled it out? I couldn't find him or Zella in 1920 but they should have been married. Dick
