Can anyone tell me if there was a baseball team in Litchfield, possibly semi-pro, sometime during the years 1895-1933? My granddad, Ed Higgins, an engineer for the Wabash railroad was supposed to have pitched for the team, but never told his family about any of this. I found out quite by accident and would like to verify the story, and if there are any articles about the team and him, I would like a copy of them including the date and name of the newspaper.
Ed Higgins was supposed to have arranged his work schedule as a railroad engineer so that he could be in Litchfield in order to pitch a game. I do know that he had the "Litchfield run" as an engineer, but have no idea of the dates. other than given above.
He was born in Ireland in 1864 and came to this country in 1865. About the time of, or shortly after, the death of his father in Hamilton, Illinois, he moved to Decatur, making that his home for the rest of his life.
