I believe your John Riley Smith could be my ggg-grandfather. My gg-grandfather was William Riley Smith born abt 1828-TN who lived in Jersey County Il in 1850 and married Margaret Gunterman. They moved to Montgomery County and were listed there in the 1860 and 1870 census before moving on to Newton County Missouri in the 1880 census. Their son James Madison Smith was my great-grandfather.
I haven't had much luck with my Smith line and probably can't offer much in the way of info right now but would gladly share what I do have and anything I might come across in the future. I would love to see what you know about these Smiths. If you'd like to contact me my e-mail is knamom@aol.com.
