Hi Lavetta,
Sorry for the delay, I have been searching for information for you. I found quite a lot of bits and pieces, but was unable to find out anything that definitively proves Samuel as a son of George Henry Jones and Amanda C. Hancock. Where and when did Samuel H. Jones die?

I will post here what I found, you likely have a lot, if not most, of this:
WWI Draft registrations
Samuel Hendrix Jones registered in Texas County, Oklahoma
b. RICHFIELD, Illinois [Litchfield? or Richfield, which is in Adams County, IL? Since you already know that both his Army and Navy papers give Litchfield, I would go with that for the place of birth]
age 29 single date of birth: 29 July 1887
previous service: 4 yrs. Navy/seaman
anyone dependent on your support: father

Was Lona Bell Nicholson married to Samuel Jones before or after Roy William Green? Or is this a person of the same name:
Texas births:
17 May 1943 Hockley County father: Roy Wm. Green mother: Lona Bell Nicholson no name give for the child

Could this be the other marriage for Samuel?......
1920 Texas County, Oklahoma Grand Valley Twp. 3-6 February 1920
44/45
Jones, Samuel H. head age 32 [if this is your Sam, hw would have turned 33 in July of 1920, so he fits]
married b. TX father: IL mother: IL farmer
Jones, Mary S. wife 24 married b. TX f: AR m: TX
Littrell, Harriet S. daughter 10 single OK TX TX
Littrell, Tereasa E. daughter 8 single OK TX TX
Littrell, Oberah L. daughter 6 single OK TX TX
Littrell, Ira C. son 4 11/12 OK TX TX
Littrell, Arthur P. son 2 8/12 OK TX TX

Mary is on her own in 1930, which to me indicates divorce from Samuel Jones, as she is again using the Littrell surname:
1930 Center Twp., Stevens County, KS
76/80A
Littrell, Mary S. head 36 WIDOOWED [from Littrell, meaning she is ignoring her marriage to Sam Jones, because if she was Sam's widow she would be JONES] married 1st at age 14
b. TX father: AR mother: TX occup: Housekeeper/private family
Littrell, Oberah daughter 17 single OK TX TX
Littrell, Jack son 15 single OK TX TX
Littrell, Arthur P. son 13 single OK TX TX
Littrell, Victor son 10 sinlge OK TX TX
Riggs, Even F. son-in-law 21 married @ 20 KY AR KY cook/hotel
Riggs, Tressa A. daughter 18 married @17 OK TX TX
Riggs, Vada L. granddaughter 1/12 KS KY OK
Riggs, Vera L. granddaughter 1/12 KS KY OK

I wondered if Victor could have been Sam's child, as he was born in 1920, but he used LITTRELL to the end of his life:
SSDI
Victor Littrell b. 3 June 1920 died 17 May 2006 last residence: Lebanon, Laclede County, Missouri number issued in Colorado before 1951

WWII Army enlistment
Littrell, Victor b. 1920 in Oklahoma residence: Oklahoma
farmhand single no dependents enlisted 27 March 1942

Mary must have been pregnant with Victor when she married Samuel Jones; the census was taken between 3 Feb and 6 Feb and Victor was born in June.

You mentioned that your Samuel had two brothers named George and Albert and a sister, Annie. Also a connection to Fannin County, TX. I am sure that you have this census, but just in case, since you didn't mention Curtis [I think Curtis was Curtis George]:
1900 Fannin County, Texas
332/335
Jones, George H. head June 1858/41 married 25 yrs. IL IL IL
farmer
Jones, A.C. wife June 1859/40 md. 25 yrs. has had 6 children/4 are living IL IL IL
Jones, ALBERT son March 1877/23 single IL IL IL
Jones, SAMUEL son July 1886/13 single TX IL IL
Jones, ANNA daughter Sept 1889/10 single TX IL IL
Jones, Curtiss son Oct 1893/6 single TX IL IL
Pardue, J. L. boarder June 1822/77 widowed NC NC VA PREACHER [could he have been the influence for George to become a preacher?] The Texas birthplace for Samuel could be an error.

WWI draft registrations:
Curtis George Jones b. 20 November 1892 in Texas
residence: Texas County, OK [same as Samuel for the draft registration]. lives Tyrone, Texas County, OK
farmer single

both Curtis and Albert are in Hall County, TX in 1920 for the census, do you have that?

Following the Jones back to Illinois:

1880 South Litchfield, Montgomery County, Illinois
Jones, George self married 30 b. IL father/mother blank
Jones, Amanda wife married 25 IL " " "
Jones, Albert son single 2 IL " " "
Jones, Allis daughter single 5 months IL " " "

Illinois Marriage Index

I know that you have George's date of death in Montgomery County, IL, as 11-5-1923, have you ordered a copy of his death certificate? His mother was still living at the time of his death:
Jones, Lamata d. 7-31-1924 in Hillsboro Twp., Montgomery County, IL

Going forward:
1880 Hillsboro, Montgomery County, Illinois

Jones, J.H. self 51 farmer NJ NJ NJ
Lamata wife 42 NJ NJ NJ
Samuel son 18 IL NJ NJ

J.C. son 8 IL NJ NJ Job Cubberley Jones
C.L. daughter 6 IL NJ NJ Cora L. md. Kieslar
I.A. daughter 4 IL NJ NJ
Parish, A.S. granddaughter 4 IL IL IL
A.S. Parish's mother was Juliet Jones:
Illinois Marriage Index
Parrish, John to Jones, Miss Julia [Juliet] 13 May 1875 Montgomery County, IL

It appears that George Henry named his sons after his brothers and himself: Samuel, Albert HENRY, Curtis GEORGE
Don't you just love census takers who are lazy and use initials? I havne't found Lamatta in 1900........but here she is in 1910:

1910 Hillsboro, Montgomery County, Illinois
7/7
Jones, Job C. head 38 single IL NJ NJ farmer
"Mattie" mother 73 widowed 56 has had 9 children/9 are living NJ NJ NJ
Jones, CURTIS nephew 17 single b. TX IL IL no occup.
George's son Curtis is in Illinois, did George bring him? I can't find George in 1910.

1920 Hillsboro, Montgomery County, IL
133/136 6 February
JOnes, Job C. head 48 single IL NJ NJ farmer
Jones, Lamata mother 81 widowed NJ NJ NJ
Jones, Dan C. brother 63 widowed IL NJ NJ farmer
Kieslar, Ruth niece 15 single IL IL IL

Kieslar, James E. to Jones, Cora L. 12 November 1899 Montgomery County, IL

Amanda's Hancock Family:

1870 Litchfield, Montgomery County, IL 25 June
3/3
Hancock, William 40 farmer IL
D.K.? 30 IL
Paralle 18 female IL believe this should be Paralee
** AMAND 16 female IL Amanda C. Hancock Jones
Lamada 14 f. IL
Mary 8 IL
Virginia 5 IL
Sarah 1 IL
David 17 IL
John 19 IL
George 3 IL
D.K. is Zerilda Forehand Hancock; 2nd wife of William
married 14 October 1860 in Montgomery County, IL. I'm not sure why the census taker listed all the girls first and the boys last, and the ages are off on David at least, he should be 7.

1880 Alabama Twp. Sacremento County, California 25 June
270/283
Hancock, Zerilda 40 widowed IL TN KY
David W. 16 son IL KY IL
Virginia E. 14 daughter IL KY IL
George A. 12 son IL KY IL
Sarah A. 10 daughter IL KY IL

Looks like William took his family to California!

going backward:
1860 Twp. 9 Range 3 Montgomery County, IL 26 July 1860
Irving P.O.
2051/2068
Hancock, William 30 grocer b. IN
Nancy 10 IL
John 8 IL
Parlee 5 IL
AMANDA 2 IL
Westbrook, James 23 farmer IL
Angeline 17 IL [believe sister of Wm. Hancock]

1850 Southwest part of District 22, Montgomery County, IL
383/389
Hancock, John 45 farmer KY
Nancy 43 NC
John 18 IN
Sarah 10 IL
ANGELINE 7 IL
Julia 4 IL
are these William's parents? He has this Angeline in his home in 1860, possibly to care for his children, as he has lost his wife.

1850 Macoupin County, IL 9 Sept 1850
4/4
Hancock, Wm. 20 farmer KY married within the year
Hancock, Vienna 17 IL married within the year

Illinois Marriage Index
Hancock, William to THOMPSON, VIENNA 1 November 1849
Macoupin County, IL
This would be Amanda C.'s mother and father; there are Thompsons all over Macoupin County, including some living next door to this couple in 1850.

Think that is all I found, I hope I have put it in a good order to be sensible :-) I'd be happy to look for whatever else you need. Do you have access to Ancestry.com?
If you can give any other information on Samuel Hendrix Jones, I'll look more for him. Did he and your grandmother separate? Do you know when and where he died? Tracking those siblings might work for locating him. Obituaries are great for locating other family members.

Later,
Barb
