Hi Frances,
Hope this finds you. I am a bit rushed for time--am a school bus driver and we have early releases today. I live in Washington state so that'll give you an idea of the time here. Will be back home about 1:30 PM Pacific Time.
First I will try to give you an idea of where I am on my research.
My great grandfather was Pierre Israel Bernier, born 12 May 1846 Maskinonge, Quebec, Canada. His Catholic baptism record give that date as 13 May, 1846 and his parents as Jean Baptiste Bernier and Marie J. Noiseux.
The Canadian researcher who helped me with this said Noiseux is not a known surname.
In the one census (1880, Juneau Co., WI) where I can find Israel he gives his mother's birthplace as Missouri and his father's as Canada.
On his citizenship application he gives his birth place as Maskinonge and says he immigrated through Detroit when he was a year old.
The next time there's any record for him is in 1865 when he enlisted at Grand Rapids, Wisconsin in the Union Army, catching the last months of the Civil War. I have his Civil War pension file. The affidavits in it place him in the Grand Rapids area prior to 1865 but without any specific details. The only sibling I have for him was a baby brother, Jean Baptiste Bernier who was born 27 May 1847, baptized and died 7 July 1847 at Maskinonge. Quebec, Canada.
His marriage license lists his parents as Baptiste Barney and Celestine Barney (neither he or his bride could read or write so there were always issues with the spelling of Bernier)
His death certificate lists his parents as John B. Bernier and Mary J. Bernier.
I have never located his parents in any census. The Canadian resercher said there was no marriage record for them there.
So....I have been searching for a Jean Baptiste and a Marie or Mary with middle initial J. or perhaps middle name Christine or some version of that with a last name that could be mistaken for Noiseux who was born in Missouri.
That's brought me to the family of Jacobo Noise or Noiset, dit L'Abbe of the St. Louis or St. Genevieve area. (Those spellings are from Spanish records.) I have some inofmation on them.
Then I found your posting today and saw that name Israel Christy and that really sent my wheels spinning..,

I have more info on Jacobo's family...am out of time...will try to catch you later...Linda
