Hi Frances...this is just a very crazy co-incidence, but you'll soon see where it leads.

There is a very prominent farming family living on a highway I drive every day. The name is Labbee. One of the daughters is a teacher so I asked her today if she knew the origin of the name Labbee. Her reply was French Canadian. I asked if they came from Missouri and she said not that he was aware of--she thought Illinois. She gave me her grandfather's name, Percy Labbee, so I could check the 1930 census for him and see if I could trace him back. It was a snap as these people didn't go missing from any census from 1930 to 1850.

Percy Labbee is the son of Claude Labbee who is the son of Alexander Labbee who is the son of Alfred Labbee.

Alfred appears in the 1850 census for Bellevue, Calhoun Co., Illinois Here's that census info:

Alfred Labbee, 39, born Canada, a laborer
Martha Jane, 25, born Kentucky
Mary 12, born Missouri
John 11, born Missouri
Josephine 5, born Illinois

In the 1860 census they're living in the same place and have an 8 year old son Alex (census has it Alax and spells the surname as Labby). Alfred is farming and has real estate valued at $1500. Wife Martha is still in the home, as is Josephine. Mary is gone from the home but John is there and listed as a lumberer (double checked that and several men are listed that way as opposed to laborer).

Looking at Alfred's age he should have a birthdate of about 1811 which fits the Alfred Labbe you have. And, with the age gap between the two older children Mary and John and the two younger ones I have to wonder if this is a second marriage. Mary may be Marie and John may be Jean Baptiste.

Let me know what you think. If you believe this is a connection to what you have I would like to know your source for Alfred's first marrriage, his siblings, etc. The Labbee descendent was going to check with her father to see if there has ever been a genealogy done for the family though she was pretty sure there isn't one. Perhaps something will turn up though. By the way she speaks and reads French and said she believes her skills are such that she could translate material if needed.

Meanwhile, thanks for the other info. You are light years ahead of me with this whole family.

Were the names of the minor children of Francois in any of the records? I'm thinking you probably would've listed them if that was the case, but have to ask anyway.

Have you encountered information about a fire destroying the Cahokia church records? That sticks in my mind, though it could be Kaskaskia. My connection in that area (Cahokia, Kaskaskia, Prairie de Rocher) is the Crelie/Crelis family, as well as the Peltier dit Antaya family and perhaps the LaVigne family. They went north to Prairie du Chien, and Portage Wisconsin, and their connections were with Green Bay and Mackinac fur traders. I've never seen any form of the Noise surname north of Missouri. My research for French Canadian/fur trade/Wisconsin families has been very extensive.
Take care...Linda
