I give up, I just wrote you a huge email and it did not go. I tried to past it here and it would not copy. I will have to redo it tomorrow. To late tonight. But did want to let you know that there is a genealogy or at least there were two people working on it, for William Alexander Labbee. And the Alex that you found is Willaim Alexander, he went by Alex in Ill and William (Bill) in Washington. I do have lots of info. Sources are: copies of estate papers for the parents of Martha Reynolds (mother of William A. and second wife of Alfred Labbe);census records;marriage records,LDS family records (which I use only as a resouce but always after I have verified via other records);death certificate of Alfred Labbee;Baptism record of Alfred Labbe(e);Guardinship record concerning daughter (Winnie Calvin) of Josephine Labbee Calvin McConnell-filed to get her inheritance from the estate of Martha Labbee Reynolds(Runnels). Corespondence with Reynolds relatives and Labbee Relatives; court records and many other records which I will provide in email (if ever it gets fixed).
The fire you mentioned I belive was in Cahokia but I will verify that for you.
There are several things of interest in your posting which I am anxious to go over.
William Alexander Labbee followed his son Claude to Washington. They went in 1901 as they are on the 1900 census of Illinois. There is an article on Williams daughter Daisy Maude which also verifies that it was 1901. By the way-Daisy Maude was also a teacher. Claude had recieved land in Washington and that was why he went there.
William A. Labbee's wife was Elizabeth Foiles and I have a very interesting article on her mother and family. Some of the Foiles went to Washington with Claude.
I am directly related to Alfred Labbee via his son Jean Baptiste or as he became known as, John B Labbee. Jean's (John's) son was George Alfred Labbee and he married first Mariah (Mary) Williams and second Isabelle McGarvey. George Alfred and Isabelle McGarvey were my mothers grandparents. They had daughter Daisy Ann Labbee who married first, Orvel Stewart (Steuart) and second James Laury. Daisy and Orvel are my grandparents-my mothers parents.
Alfred's father was Joseph Labbe(e) and his mother was Rhoda (Rodde) Christy. I believe that Joseph was father was either Jacques Noiset or Nicolas. Joseph was born around 1773. He died Aug of 1840 and is buried at St Josephs Parish in Randolph CO.
As to whether the Labbe(e)'s are from Ill or Mo--they are actually from both. At the time both Ill and Mo (along with parts of Indiana and Arkansas) were all part of the Louisiana Teritory. Since it has been under French, Spanish, English and American rule--that is why it is hard to trace these families. The spelling of the name depended on who took the record. The location of the record also depends, on a large part, on who took the record. It should be noted that Alfred lists his birth in Canada yet his baptismal record states that he was in the Missouri Teritory (the parish is on the records and the parish is in MO teritory). I have learned (from a good friend and researcher)in Mo that many of the French did not recognize the ruling of the teritory by any other than the French--and thus considered themselves as Canadians and loyal to France. That could be why Alfred lists Canada as his birthplace.
Yes, there are two wifes for Alfred--first wife was the mother of Jean Baptiste and his sister Marie (John B and Mary). Second wife, Martha Reynolds, was the mother of Josephine and William Alexander.
Joseph Labbe had the following chidren:
Ambrose Labbe born 1810 m. Anne Bets, d before 1860
Alfred Labbe born 1811 m. first, Hannah Hinch(maybe Hedges) and second Martha Reynolds (Runnels), died 1878.
Joshua Labbe born apprx 1825, m Odetta ?; died ? (I lose him after 1860--it is possible that he went to Wisconsin but am still researching that. In 1860 he was on the Randolph Co Ill census and living with him is John, the son of Ambrose and Anne. Since John (and this is not my John but the son of Ambrose) is living in Joshua's household in 1860 and I can find no trace of his parents-I believe that Ambrose and Anne both died sometime between 1850 and 1860.)
There may have been other children. I know that they had the two children of Rodde's (father unknown) for a time. And also the two children of Rodde's daughter Aggie(Marie Aggie?). I have the indenture papers(copies) for these two children(Aggies). I also have the (copies I should say) of the Exchange papers for Marie(Aggie?) between Pierre Viriat and Rodde Christy Viriat (Rodde's first husband) and the Widow Giraurd. Did I fail to mention that Rodde was a mulatto?
Please tell your friend hello for me--always glad to meet new cousins--and now I have met two new ones--
More later
Frances
