Sherman was the oldest child of William and Elizabeth (Daily) Kern. Wm and Eliza had 8 child, and there is nothing to say so, but I wondered if Eliza may have died in child birth, or shortly after as her last child was born in 1887 the same year she died. Wm married his 2nd wife Eliza Jane Harris in Sept 1888, she had children from her 1st marriage, One son was born to Wm and Eliza Harris.
The info I have which was given to me by by a distant cousin of yours (Mrs. Wilson, also a decendant of William), states William Kern was not old enough to enlist in the Civil War when it began, it was not until March 25 1864 that he volunteered at New Albany IN. Having enlisted for 3 years, he was a private in Co.D.53rd. Regiment of the Indiana Infantry.
Hope this helps some. Caralyn
