I had posted earlier information about John and Isabel Decker Martin who moved to Clay county from Westmoreland, PA. I had looked at the possbility that there was another daughter, Sarah who was listed next door to the Martin's in the 1860 Clay, IN census with her husband Willaim Slick. She also was listed in Isabel's father's will (Isaac Decker) as Sarah Slick under some power of attorney for Isabel. Indeed it turns out she was the daughter of John and Isabel. Michael Caldwell of PA posted the following: Indiana, PA "Indiana Messenger" issue of 2 October 1901 Wife or Widow? A strange case from New Florence, presenting many complications is before the Westmoreland courts. John Ambrose, of New Florence, died in 1898, leaving, presumably, his widow, Sarah Ambrose. It is alleged, however, that Sarah Ambrose was the undivorced wife of one William Slick, of the same place. The present claimant of the estate, Sarah Ambrose, it is known was married to the decedent in 1869, but it is alleged that she was previously married to William Slick, who she admits is the father of her one child which is dead. Neither she nor Slick have shown proof of divorce and the latter is now married to another woman and has eleven children. The suit was instigated by creditors of the estate of the decedent. I did some research in Clay county and found the obituary: Obituary from the Brazil Daily Times Tuesday March 14, 1911 Aged Widow Dies Mrs. Sarah Ambrose aged 66 years, 11 months, 9 days passed away at 4:35 o’clock this morning at the home of her sister, Mrs. Rachel Wesley, residing at 120 south Walnut street. Mrs. Ambrose came here from New Florence, Penn., about a year ago and has been in poor health, since her death was due to a complication of disease. She was a widow of John Ambrose, who preceded her 12 years ago. She is survived by five sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Wesley at whose home the death occurrred, Mrs. W.T. Brown, Mrs. John Chesterfield, Mrs. Mary Ambrose, and mrs. Luconda Thomas. The brothers are Leanoard Martin, John Martin, and Henry Martin. the mother of the deceased is also living and is past 90 years of age. The funeral will occur at the U.B. church in Harmony at 10 o’clock Thursday morning and the remains will be laid to rest in the Calcutta cemetery. More info: Sarah Martin was the second child of John and Isabel Martin, born 5 Apr 1844 in Westmoreland PA; died 14 Mar 1911in Brazil, Clay Co, IN. She was married to William Slick on 9 Nov 1858 (from Civil War pension records); 2nd marriage to John Ambrose 21 Oct 1869. It appears that her only child was Nelson George Slick from her first marriage. 1900 PA Census: Westmoreland Co. St. Clair Twp. New Florence Village e.d. 125 p. 19 Nelson B.
