I gave it another try. It paid off. Thank goodness I have an 1860 index CD for Indiana. Could not find the Totten name in Pike Co. so I requested "William" for the first name and "Jefferson" for the township where the family was in 1870. Then I went page by page in the index. There was the answer -- the last name was transcribed as "Lotten". 1860 - Pittsburgh, Jefferson Twp., Pike Co. IN page 38, 21 June 1860 Wm. W. Totten, 48, farmer, born KY Eliza, 46, VA Henry, 18, IN Nancy, 16, IN Eliza, 12, IN Hannah, 10, IN Lucinda, 7, IN Martha 4, IN James D., IN, farm laborer John Arnold, IN, farm laborer -------- I just knew it was the same family.
