Maggie,
Atwood Clutch was a division of the Atwood Vacuum Machine Co. located in Rockford, Illinois in the early part of the twentieth century. The parent company was founded by the Seth Atwood family. Originally manufacturing vacuum machines, an engineer working at Atwood by the name of Thielander designed a clutch and gave birth to the Atwood-Thielander Clutch. After several years, the Atwood family sold the clutch manufacturing division to a company in Auburn, Indiana, thus the name Auburn Clutch. They kept the basic design until the 1960's or 70's when they sold the clutch business to Dana-Spicer Corp. When Dana-Spicer decided to get out of the clutch business in the late 1990's, they sold the over-the-road clutch business to Eaton and the off-road clutch business to a private, family owned concern. This family happened to live in Auburn, Indiana, so the clutch line came home, so to speak. After two or three years the family could not make a go of it and sold the clutch line to Metal-Technologies, a company that makes many items. They, in turn, have just this past month, sold the company to another privately owned business located in Iowa.
I hope this helps you out. The clutch line has certainly been around the block.
Regards,
Dan Lemmons
