Seeking information on ancestors of JOHN FLINT, b. 19 Oct. 1861 De Kalb Co. IN. He was the son of an unknown Flint who was married to Mary Davis. This unknown Flint supposedly fought in the Civil War, and died of sunstroke during a march.
JOHN FLINT was married to EMMA IDA MOORE. They had three children - GEORGE EDWARD, HARRY E. and a daughter that did not survive. GEORGE E. was born in Edgerton, Defiance Co. OH. in 1887. JOHN and EMMA eventually divorced, and John was living in Albion, MI when he died 5 Sept. 1937.
I have been unable to locate JOHN in any census of De Kalb County. The only FLINT I've found is a GEORGE W. FLINT, who shows up in the 1860 census. He is listed as a 38 year old farmer from Ohio. Listed with him are a woman MARY, 28 yrs. old, a child MARTHA J., 9 and a child MARIA L., 6. I found no later listing, but found a Mary Flint in Defiance County, OH in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. She is listed in 1870 with just three children: Martha J., Maria L. and John (age 8). This puts John's birthdate as 1861, since the census was taken in July and (if this is my John) his birthday was not until October.
In the 1880 census, MARY appears by herself as widowed.
This evidence is only circumstantial conjecture.
GEORGE EDWARD FLINT left some notes on the Flint family. In them, he states that the unknown Flint ancestor who married Mary Davis had three children: Elibeth (Elizabeth?), Maria, and John. That gives me two out of three!
Anyone out there that can shed some light on this puzzle?
