Late 1800's Elkhart County Childrens Homes

Does anyone know where an unwanted child born in 1874 born in Elkhart County might have been placed? My Great Grandfather, Asa Callister was born in this county on November 10, 1874 but census records indicate he did not know what state his parents were born in. Perhaps he was an orphan? The earliest record I can find of him is in a 1900 census in Oregon. Any assistance would be very helpful.
