In 1840 there were no Fergusons or Raineys in Floyd Co. There was an Andrew Ferguson in Clark Co who had two sons between 10-16 and a David Ferguson in Jefferson County who also had two sons 10-16.There was a Sarah Ferguson in Clark County who had two sons between 15-20.
Those were the closest I could come to parents for him.
I found no Raineys in any close county. Perhaps she came from Louisville, Ky or they moved there after 1840.
In 1850 I found a Lothrop Ferguson with a daughter 17 so he could have had an older son. He had no wife listed. He was 35 and was born in In.That was the only Ferguson family there. Still no Raineys. I did find one George Rainey in Louisville in 1850. He was 18 yrs old and born in Tn.
It is so hard to locate people before 1850 because the census only gives heads of households.
Did they have daughters Caroline, Susan and Sarah? If so in 1850 they were in Washington Co, In. and the census says he was born in Ky.
Can you get a death record? That might have his parents listed on it.
