Poor Valeria Hummel. She was one of those people who was fated to hardly ever get her name recorded correctly. She must have driven the census-takers crazy.
I don’t know what you know about her, but here is what I have.
She was the youngest child of Henry Hummel & Eleanor McNaughton, born 30 Jul 1821 in Muskingum County, OH. She came with the family to Grant Co., IN in 1831. In 1837 she acquired property (80 acres) in Washington Twp., Grant Co, IN. Two of her siblings got properrty on the same day. Since she married Charles T. Jacobs on 6 Dec 1848, I was unable to locate her in the 1850 Census.
The Ancestry.com Census Search Index shows Valeria Jacobs b. abt 1822 located in Wabash County, IN, which abuts Grant Co to the north in both 1860 and 1870 (listed as Velina.. Her spouse is not listed in the entry, but I am presuming Charles was there, also. (I have not seen the actual census). The 1880 Census [LDS Family Search site] shows Chas. J. [sic] Jacobs and Velena [sic] Jacobs (b. abt 1822 in OH) in Cass Twp., Greene Co., Missouri. The census lists 2 children, a son, John H. Jacobs b. abt 1850 (with wife Belle and 1-year old daughter Bertha) and a daughter, Laura b. abt 1859. Both of the children are listed as born in Indiana. A posting on the LDS site shows a death date of 7 Feb 1897 and burial in Cave Springs Cemetery, Cass Twp., Greene Co., MO. On the basis of this data, I cannot be certain whether Charles’s middle initial was T or J.
One otherwise helpful Rootsweb Family Tree (The RUMPLE-HAWORTH Family History) lists her as Valerina Hummel m. Charles T. Jacobs.
P.S. In another posting, you inquired about a book on The Henry Hummel Family. I know of no such book, but your title sounds very much like the heading on a page sent to me by the late Dr. Russell M. Hummel, M.D., as part of a large number of documents he put together over a lifetime of research. The information above came mostly from his work and the Bureau of Land Management.
