work house / boys school? 1880 census

Ie found one of my relatives (Jesse Crandall) in the 1880 Henricks County Census. The location is listed as Guilford in a household of 300 underage males who all "work in chair shop". The head of household was listed as Jesse Barker, age 12.

I've also found his three sisters in the 8th Ward, Marion County, also in a group home of about 200 women and girls.

Jesse Crandall was born in Henry Co, IN, in 1869. His father remarried after his mother died, and this is the first clue I've found as to what happened to the children (the father is listed in the 1880 Henry County census with his new wife and her children).

Can anyone tell me what this institution was? Does this imply that they were abandoned by their father?
