Is anyone familiar with the MENKE and/or RUST Family? Family tradition states that Mr. and Mrs. MENKE came to the U.S. from Osnabrück with three or four young children including Elizabeth, Lizetta, and Louis. Both parents died shortly after the family's arrival which was in 1849 or 1850. Elizabeth was supposedly raised by a Lutheran minister and Lizetta & Louis were raised by their Aunt RUST. From my own research I've determined the following. Mr. MENKE (apparently died before 1850). Mrs. MENKE's given name was Mary and she was born abt. 1813 and died between 1850 and 1860, probably in Jackson County, IN. Their Children: 1. Christian MENKE (1837-1899) married Louisa HENKE, lived most of his adult life in Dubois County, IN 2. Elizabeth MENKE (1841-1934) married Frederick SPEIER in Indianapolis where she lived her adult life. 3. Lizetta MENKE (1842-1905) married Charles OTTO in Indianapolis where she lived her adult life. 4. Louis MENKE (c1845-c1864) supposedly joined the Union Army and died while in service and was buried in Virginia. (I've been unable to positively identify him in CW records.) The last record I have on him is in Jackson County, IN in 1860 when he was living in the household of Henry MORRING/MORNING. 5. Mary MENKE (c1848-????) found in the 1850 census, no further information, assumed she died before 1860. In the 1850 census for Brownstown Twp, Jackson County, IN I found the following family. Manka, Mary, age 37 born in Germany Manka, Eliza, age 9, born in Germany Manka, Louis, age 5, born in Germany Manka, Mary, age 2, born in Germany Aunt RUST's first name was Lizetta or Henrietta (c1810-1894) and she was married to Frederick RUST (c1811-bet 1870-1880). They were living in Jackson County, IN in 1860, but moved to Dubois County, IN by 1870. After Frederick's death, sometime before 1880, Lizetta lived with her niece Lizetta (nee MENKE) OTTO in Indianapolis. I feel pretty sure that Lizetta RUST, was the sister of Mary MENKE and both were born in Holland (the country). I don't know what their maiden name was. I'm also fairly positive the MENKE family was Lutheran. Thank you, Joel Notify Administrator about this message?
