Matthew Stout, Jane Gibbs, Jane Stout, George Stout, Oliver Stout, John Stout

I need help with my quest to find the family of my ggrandfather, John A. Stout. I believe his family may have had connections with Jay County, Indiana.

To begin, I found John A. Stout in the 1880 US census. He was living with Eliza and Elizabeth Spencer in Randolph County, Indiana. He was 16 and was working as a farmhand. The census has relationship "other". I know this must be my John A. Stout because later he and my ggrandmonther Anna L. Slick lived with this same family in Richmond, In. for a few years before they got their first home.

Now I've found that there was also a six-year-old (no Stout last name) John living with Eliza Spencer and Elizabeth Toney Spencer in 1870. Toney genealogists believe that Eliza and Elizabeth were childless. Could this little boy have been John A. Stout already living with them? I've checked guardianship records for Wayne County and found nothing. I need to check in Preble County, Ohio because that is where I found a marriage for Eliza and Elizabeth Toney Spencer and where Toney genealogists believe they were raised.

What is so strange to me is that I found an old journal from 1894 that has Aunt Jane Stout, George Stout, Matt Stout, L? A. Stout, and other names such as Hieff (There was one surname Hieff family in New Garden twp, Indiana in 1860), Hausfield?, and an Oliver, Minnie, and a Susie first name. John A. Stout seemed to be surrounded by a Stout family. In one entry, he writes, "Matt Stout and Hieff came over to eat supper". This sounds like Matt lives close by. The only Matthew Stout family in the Richmond, Indiana city directory (or anywhere that I can find in census's) was a Matthew Stout (wife Jane) who lived in Richmond one year, 1893-1894. I traced this Matthew Stout and family and found that he was born in Ohio and that his family were Quakers from North Carolina. This Matthew lived in Wayne Co., Indiana as a teen-ager and as a young adult and later lived in Jay County, In. as well as having lived in Richmond for one year.
Although it would appear that this is the same Matt Stout (who had sons named Oliver and George and a wife who could have been Aunt Jane), Stout genealogists are very doubtful that John A. belonged to this family in any way because in the 1900 US census he said his father was from New Jersey (although earlier census's said his father was born in Indiana and his mother in Ohio) and no Quaker Stouts' came from New Jersey. However, I can find no other Matthew Stouts anywhere in a census from 1850 to 1920.

If anyone would like to help, I would be so glad. I have traced some Stouts in this area and would be happy to share. Not much information is available on many Stouts in Eastern Indiana, so some of my research is probably new. One more question: Who were Harry Stout and Lily Russell? I found their marriage in 1882 in Wayne County, Indiana and I found her with her parents on an 1870 Census in Wayne County, and I found them living in Jay County, In. for several years, but I can not find anything else about this Harry. I believe John A. was somehow connected with him, too, because I found John's son living with Harry's widow in a Richmond City directory from about 1914. Help!!
Sincerely,
Susan Davis
